VAIL CASCADE TO HOST 10TH ANNUAL BIG BEERS, BELGIANS & BARLEYWINES FESTIVAL

VAIL, Colo. – September 2009 – This winter the Vail Cascade will host the 10th Annual Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Festival Jan. 7 -9, 2010 featuring limited release beers, tastings, brewmasters’ dinners, educational seminars and more. Overnight accommodations during the event begin at $209 per night or a special event package for two is available for $688.04.
The Big Beers Festival Package for Two includes accommodations for one night and two passes to the Big Beers, Belgians and Barleywines Calibration Dinner, the Brewmasters’ Dinner, seminars and commercial tastings. The Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Festival is designed to introduce the public to the extreme variety of brewing styles, ingredients, flavors and aromas that are available in the world of beer. The styles showcased in the event include: “big,” which is defined as over 7 percent alcohol by volume including barleywines, stouts, porters, double IPAs, scotch ales and more; “Belgian” which encompasses a traditional raft of styles including Dubbel, Triple, Quadruple, Lambic, Saison and other European-based flavors and brewing methods many of which are quite light in flavor in contrast to the traditional “big” beers; and “experimental.”
The three-day event is designed to engage and educate participants on big beers.
• Thursday kicks off with Adam Avery, brewmaster and founder of Avery Brewing, and Sam Calagione, founder/president of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery hosting the Calibration Dinner. Dinner will be served by Chef Adam Votaw in Atwater on Gore Creek Restaurant who will prepare a double-pairing menu. For each course Chef Votaw will pair two beers from each presenter’s brewery.
• Friday offers an action-packed day with a welcome reception, tasting of Commemorate 10th Anniversary beers specially prepared by brewers such as Anheuser-Busch, Boulevard Brewing Company from Kansas City, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. from California, Wynkoop Brewing Co. from Denver and many others. The Homebrew Competition judging will take place Friday afternoon and various seminars also are available throughout the day.
• Friday night Peter Bouckaert from New Belgium Brewing Co. and Lodewijk Swinkels from LaTrappe at Bierbrouwerij Koningshoeven out of the Netherlands will be featured at the 10th Anniversary Bewmasters’ Dinner. Chef Votaw will be collaborating with a guest chef to design this double-beer pairing dinner.
• On Saturday, there will be an Experimental Brewing Seminar in the morning followed by brewmaster presentations in the after along with the Food & Beer Pairing Challenge. The commercial tasting portion of the Big Beers Festival takes place from 2:30-7 p.m. showcasing more than 150 different commercially produced specialty beers from around the world.

Proceeds from the Big Beers Festival benefit the Vail Valley Charitable Fund, a local organization that helps individuals who live and work in the Vail Valley that have critical financial need due to medical catastrophes, accidents or long-term illnesses.
