  • Spring Back to Vail - World Pond Skimming Championships

    When: 04/14/2013

The legendary World Pond Skimming Championships returns to Lake Golden Peak at Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak base area on April 14, 2013. The venue will open at 1:30pm with expos and giveaways from event sponsors, and the competition will get going at 3:00pm.

The annual competition entails floatable (and sometimes sinkable) athletes launching themselves off an on-snow jump onto an icy pond in attempt to successfully exit the pond on both feet. Competitors will vie for both fame and glory in a showing that defies the laws of physics – and perhaps even common sense.   Registration is $75 and is limited to a field of 75 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

    When: 04/19/2015

The legendary World Pond Skimming Championships return to Lake Golden Peak at Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak base area on April 19, 2015.

This year, two Champions will be crowned – the top male and top female competitor – who will each take home an Epic Pass for the 2015-2016 season and a pair of Liberty Skis.

    Registration details coming soon!

    World Pond Skimming Championships Rules:

    • All competitors are required to wear a CE certified ski/snowboard helmet.
    • Competitors who are legally intoxicated will not be allowed to take their run and will be disqualified.
    • Competitors may only use a single pair of snow skis or a single snowboard as a means to cross the pond.  No additional equipment or aid may be used (i.e. no water skis).  Zero points will be given in the distance category for using any skis wider than 11.5cm at mid-ski (waist).
    • No poles of any kind may be used.
    • Absolutely no inverted aerials into the pond.  You will be immediately disqualified.
    • Absolutely no diving. You will be immediately disqualified.
    • No starting above the start line.
    • Only one participant may attempt crossing the pond at a time.
    • Competitors may only attempt a crossing when the pond is clear of all people, equipment, debris, etc. The starter will signal when the pond and course are clear and a participant may attempt a crossing.  The starter has the absolute final say.
    • Do not try to ski/ride out the side of the pool.
    • Please exit only at the end of the pool.
    • If a competitor crashes before reaching the pond, they will be disqualified immediately (there will be no reruns).
    • All competitors may use the participant hot tub after their run.  Once full, as a new person gets in, the first person in gets out.
    • Each registrant who participates in the event on April 19th will receive a layer from Helly Hansen.
