Opening Day at Vail Mountain Quickly Approaching
With temparatures still warm and the summer in full bloom, it's hard to think about layering and gearing up for ski season in Vail. However, Vail Mountain is already in full preparation mode. Winter is definitely on our minds! With only 85 days until Opening Day at Vail, the excitement is growing!
Many improvements to Vail Mountain have been made in the last year, especially in celebration of Vail's 50th anniversary. So, what's new this year? The helicopters are already installing Vail's new Mountaintop Express Lift (#4).
The towers for Vail Mountain’s new, six-passenger chairlift to replace the Mountain Top Express Lift (#4) were flown in and set early Wednesday morning with the help of Timberline Helicopters’ Kaman K-Max helicopter. In total, 14 towers, crossarms and sheave assemblies were installed in a matter of hours as construction continues on the new lift in preparation for the 2013-2014 winter season. The upper and lower terminals will be constructed over the next few weeks.
The new high-speed, six-passenger Doppelmayr chairlift will result in a 33 percent increase in uphill capacity for the lift, or 3,600 people per hour, which is the same capacity as Vail’s new Gondola One. It will feature loading gates with a right angle loading conveyor system, which has been shown to reduce the number of lift stops and slows, thereby increasing the efficiency of the lift. The old Mountaintop Express Lift (#4) was installed in 1985 and provides access to Patrol Headquarters and a number of surrounding areas including Vail’s legendary Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin.
