Atwater Beer Buzz February 21

Greetings! 

Just a brief update today, as the Rocky Mountain Microbrew Symposium is happening in Colorado Springs tomorrow and our wonderful, continual, light-as-a feather snowfall is making daylight travel a strategic advantage.

Our next Brewmaster’s Weekend with Grand Teton Brewing Co. is coming together nicely! The beers that have been chosen for the Small Plates & Craft Beer Pairings are as follows: 

  • Sweetgrass American Pale Ale
  • Bitch Creek Extra Special Brown
  • Pursuit of Hoppiness Imperial Red
  • Double Vision Doppelbock

The culinary team is looking forward to creating samples for their magical menu creation, and I’ll keep you posted with menu development! In the meantime, March 15 & 16th (St. Patrick’s Day weekend!) are the dates for your calendar, and reservations are available for those of you who plan these things early. 

Wednesday Craft Beer Tastings continue in a wonderful way, and our guests were pleased to taste the new Samuel Adams offerings with Tina Zito yesterday. The White Lantern & Double Agent IPL were new to everyone, have just been released in the Vail Valley, and the Angry Orchard Ginger was a delicious and tasty treat. Thanks so much to Tina for being here! 

Next week Jeff Neuweiler will be here with a variety of Sierra Nevada products for your tasting pleasure, so join us – once again – from 4:30 – 6:30pm on Wednesday in Fireside Bar. The $2 pizza slices flew off the plate this week! 

New this week on our craft beer list are:

Aria Club's Recipe for a healthy Orange, Spiced Walnut & Cranberry Salad

Eating fruits and vegetables in season ensures that they will be fresh, at their peak flavor, and more abundant at the supermarket. Citrus fruits are typically grown from November through February, making them one of the few produce items available fresh in the winter. Check out this beautiful, lettuce-free salad that makes a festive side dish, or top with diced grilled chicken to make it a more filling meal.

Ingredients:

  • 6 tablespoons honey
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons water
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon (generous) ground ginger
  • 1 cup walnut halves and pieces
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup cranberry juice cocktail
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 8 oranges, peel and white pith removed, sliced into 1/2-inch-thick rounds, chilled
  • Fresh mint sprigs (optional)

Methods:

  • Preheat oven to 325°F.
  • Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Mix honey, water, allspice, salt, and ginger in large bowl to blend.
  • Add nuts; toss to coat well.
  • Strain nuts, reserving liquid.
  • Transfer nuts to baking sheet.
  • Sprinkle nuts with sugar.
  • Bake until golden brown, about 17 minutes.
  • Cool completely.
  • Whisk 3/4 cup water, cranberry juice and reserved liquid from nuts in medium saucepan to blend.
  • Stir in dried cranberries.
  • Bring to boil.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until cranberries soften and liquid is reduced to thin syrup, about 20 minutes. (Can be made 3 days ahead. Store nuts airtight at room temperature. Cover and chill cranberry mixture)
  • Arrange orange slices on platter.
  • Spoon cranberry mixture over.
  • Sprinkle nuts over.
  • Garnish with mint, if desired.

Serves 8

Atwater Beer Buzz February 15

Greetings from picturesque Vail! 

The snow is coming down, and it’s absolutely inspirational. Everyone has a smile to offer, a story to tell, and this incredible winter wonderland is why most of us live here. It’s fantastic! The Colorado craft beer scene is another reason to live here, and it’s cool that we’re called the Napa Valley of craft beer.

Last weekend was our Brewmaster’s Weekend with Eric Rode from Tommyknocker Brewery, and we had a wonderful time! Guests and locals flocked to Meet the Brewmaster on Friday evening, and tasted a wide variety of craft beers, including Jack Whacker Wheat – lightest on the palate, and Butt Head Bock – darkest on the palate. One of the favorite beers of the weekend was Tommyknocker Hop Strike Black IPA, which was also featured in Fireside and Atwater over the weekend. The Small Plates & Craft Beer Pairings were a hit, with attendees struggling to decide which pairing was the best one; the Day Boat Scallop & Black Cod with Tommyknocker Jack Whacker Wheat or the Baked Wild Blueberry Pancakes with Tommyknocker Imperial Nut Brown Ale….?

Next Brewmaster’s Weekend will feature Rob Mullin from Grand Teton Brewing Co. in Victor, Idaho, so put it on your calendar! Friday, March 15th will be our Meet the Brewer event in Fireside from 4 – 7pm, and Saturday, March 16th is scheduled for the Small Plates & Craft Beer Pairing at 5pm.

Our Wednesday Craft Beer Tastings continue – going strong! Jack Albertson from Crazy Mountain Brewing Co was here this week, and poured for a steady crowd from right at 4:30 until after 6:30pm. It was a busy Wednesday, and the crowd was pleased to taste several Crazy Mountain beers, including Crazy Mountain Lava Lake Wit, Crazy Mountain Mountain Livin’ Pale Ale, Crazy Mountain Amber, Crazy Mountain Cara de Luna, and Crazy Mountain Hookiebob IPA. 

Next Wednesday look forward to meeting Tina Zito from Samuel Adams, who will be showcasing several unique beers from their large collection including angry Orchard Ginger Cider. A few of those selected are Samuel Adams Double Agent IPL, Samuel Adams White Lantern and Samuel Adams Alpine Spring. Mystery beers will be part of this tasting, too…from their barrel collection. As always, 4:30 – 6:30pm in Fireside Bar.

For Valentine’s Day we featured three of the craft beers on our list:

  • Young’s Double Chocolate Stout on nitro (draft)
  • Ommegang Three Philosophers
  • Lindemans Framboise

They were here for the final evening of a large bankers conference in-house, so it was a bit different than the norm with our leisure guests. Attendees were sampling Upslope IPA, Upslope Brown Ale, and the new seasonal, Upslope Foreign Style Stout. Next week we’re welcoming Jack from Crazy Mountain Brewing Co., and I will post what he’s bringing on our Atwater on Gore Creek Facebook page.
